About the MOOC
The Prison Safe MOOC constitutes a high-quality online learning course that provides the opportunity for open – free learning to penitentiary institution or probation authority to increase staff awareness and understanding of LBGTIQ inmates – their needs and the elevated risks they face.
Target groups: Prison administrators, prison staff, social workers, civil society.
Content
The Prison Safe Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) consists of five modules:
- Module 1: Introduction: Why the focus on LGBTIQ prisoners
- Module 2: International, European and National Standards and Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners
- Module 3: LGBTIQ people in prisons’ experiences of discrimination, stigma and isolation
- Module 4: Prison operations and LGBTIQ: improving prison and probation processes
- Module 5: Best Practices and Inspiring Approaches
Tutors
Prof. Charis Xinari
Charis Xinari holds a PhD and an MSc in English Literature from The University of Edinburgh, and a B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Cyprus. Her doctoral dissertation examines the matter of gender embodiment in transgender narratives aiming to discuss the materiality of gender performances. She has taught at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Cyprus, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the European University Cyprus where she is currently Associate Professor in Critical and Cultural Theory, and Chairperson of the Department of Humanities.
Georgia Charalambous
Georgia Charalambous is a researcher and trainer currently working as a Prevention Officer for Cyprus Family Planning Association. She is also a PhD candidate, studying homophobia and transphobia in education. Her fields of expertise include sexuality, LGBTQI rights, homophobia/transphobia, sex education, human rights, on which she participated in various conferences, published articles and book chapters, participated in research projects. Georgia worked as a collaborator with ILGA Europe, Accept-CY and the University of Nicosia.
Rita Lourenço
Rita Lourenço holds a degree in Criminology, an MA in Human Potential Management, a Post-Graduation in Criminology and Social Reintegration and an Executive Education on Applied Project Management. Additionally, she is a certified trainer. Since 2009 she has been involved in the implementation of different EU projects (REC, KA1, KA2, KA3, etc.). At Aproximar she is the Head of the Criminal Justice System Unit where she manages and coordinates CJS projects and programmes.
Rafael Lupson
Rafael Lupson holds a Master's degree in Counselling and Educational Psychology and is a certified trainer. His career started with a curricular internship as a school psychologist in Fernando Pessoa School Cluster, where, besides psychological evaluation, he designed and facilitated Socioemotional Learning sessions and facilitated a Career Counselling programme. Afterwards, Rafael did an Erasmus+ Internship at WANT Research Team (Universitat Jaume I) in Castelló de la Plana. At Aproximar, he is a consultant within the Criminal Justice System Unit, where he helps design, implement and evaluate programmes and projects.
Ourania Xylouri
Ourania Xylouri is the Founder and Managing Director of the Athens Lifelong Learning Institute. She has an extensive experience in lifelong learning initiatives and a focus relating to human capital development and social inclusion. She has been the project manager in a series of large and complex projects. Ourania Xylouri has been awarded a B.A. in Sociology and an M.Sc in Human Resources and Employment Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK.
Xenofon Chalatsis
Xenofon Chalatsis is a project manager at the Athens Lifelong Learning Institute. Xenofon Chalatsis is a psychologist and has been awarded an M.Sc. in Social Psychology from the University of Warwick, UK. He is an expert in the development of educational curricula and supplementary learning and training material in the field of adult education and in the implementation of adult education initiatives. He also has developed expertise in support of the learning process of the participants, especially regarding people from vulnerable and disadvantaged social groups. He has also been involved in many innovative European projects.
